Q: Do Coil Voltage Boosters Work?
A: Older single coil distributor based engines can benefit from a voltage booster at high rpm. Modern multi coil electronic ignition engines are unlikely to benefit. Single coil distributor engines suffer from a decreasing dwell time at higher rpm. Increasing voltage supply to the coil can overcome the decrease in dwell time and help the coil reach its maximum charge. If the coil has sufficient dwell time and is fully charged, boosting voltage will only cause the coil to overheat and produce a weaker spark. Modern ECUs should have a tight enough control on dwell to ensure that the coil is properly charged at all rpm. Boosting voltage in this situation would only help if the rpm was so high that the coil did not have time to fully charge. Return to Top.
